It is fitting the first meeting a revamped Dubbo Turf Club will host is a Racing NSW Showcase meeting which is headlined by a $150,000 Country Championships Qualifier.
Racegoers will hardly recognise the place on February 19 when the gates are thrown open for one of the richest meetings ever held in the city.
The Turf Club has been renovated for the races and the fans, with a slow work track installed as well as a new dam which will supply the facility with roughly 65 megalitres of water.
The drainage on certain key areas of the track has also been improved, boosting the chances of racing in wet weather, while the female jockeys’ room and the stewards’ room have also been upgraded.
Also getting a facelift is the member’s area, where a balcony has been installed while many other areas have been renovated.
“It really gives the place a different outlook when you get here,” Dubbo Turf Club general manager Vince Gordon said, before speaking about debuting the new look at the bumper meeting.
“It’s the way to have it. It’s a special meeting for a special occasion and it’s a Showcase meeting as well so we’ll have the best horses in the area racing for special money. I think there’s going to be about $375,000 in prizemoney on offer so it’s a big day.”
The Western District Country Championships Qualifier is the main attraction, with the region’s best aiming for a top two finish and a ticket to the $400,000 final at Royal Randwick.
“It’s an exciting opportunity for horses in the area,” Gordon said, this year marking third edition of the Country Championships.
“You don’t get to race for this kind of prize pool very often and its great to see trainers targeting their horses for this race.”
